    WebMD Health Services (WHS) in Portland is looking for a Senior Architect to join our product development team. You will provide technical leadership to drive the technology and architecture of the WHS production and development ecosystems. You will be a part of a high energy and dynamic team that delivers dynamic and powerful health-changing products. You will collaborate often with other senior engineers and architects to build our scalable distributed system. You must be able to fearlessly articulate your view without concern about orthodoxy or “how it’s done here”. We are looking for that elusive person who is visionary and pragmatic, handling ambiguity with confidence. Software Architects at WHS are team leaders who design and specify software and technical requirements, writing and building software alongside highly agile teams of engineers.

    To create a long term vision and roadmap for WHS’s Platform Services team, align it with our roadmap for our many products, and follow through on execution, successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:


    • Good grounding in identity management (e.g. KeyCloak), API Gateways (e.g. Kong), message bus software (e.g. RabbitMQ, Kafka), monitoring and alerting systems (e.g. Splunk, Elastic Stack) and enterprise systems
    • Extensive experience working with secured data storage and transmission, resolving security concerns, and compliance with HIPAA, PCI and other security and information standards
    • Working with high availability, geographically diverse, redundant systems with consistent disaster recovery practices
    • Completion of one or more projects using Node.js, .NET and Windows systems
    • Broad experience designing and directing the architecture of large scale distributed systems using sound systems design and analytical thinking
    • Broad knowledge and hands-on experience of SaaS, PaaS, IaaS with familiarity of one or more public cloud offerings (e.g. AWS, GAE, Oracle, Azure)
    • Ability and experience partnering with TechOps to design platforms that support the team’s overall technical architecture and enabling DevOps to extend and support those platforms
    • Experience designing and implementing RESTful microservices
    • Experience moving from monolithic to microservice architectures
    • Demonstrable practices in researching and monitoring current technology trends and architectural patterns, and selling an organization on adopting new technological directions
    • Strong interpersonal skills supported by effective written communication and presentation skills
    • Experience working with agile software development methodologies (e.g., XP, scrum) using incremental architecture and design
    • Practitioner of test driven development
    • True passion for collaboration, building and creating consensus, and doing the right thing
    • Proven mentor to upcoming Software Engineers
    • Strong leadership in providing vision, technological direction, and team building
    • Able to quickly design, document and communicate story driven software system specifications using a wide variety of tools (e.g. G-Suite, Confluence, Gliffy, Jira, Whiteboard & markers, etc.)


    It's great if you also have:

    • Knowledge of open source technologies in the PaaS/IaaS space
    • Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
    • Experience with shepherding an organization into using Docker and Kubernetes
    • Experience with the Apache stack
    • Experience in Linux-based environments
    • Familiarity with data modeling principles in both relational and non-relational environments
    • Knowledge of Java and PowerShell
    • Knowledge of instrumentation and telemetry
